History
At the turn of the 20th century, the Bonneau family left their farming life near Bordeaux in search of new opportunity in California. After settling in San Francisco, a generation later August and Catherine Bonneau planted their roots on a 70-acre parcel just south of the historic town of Sonoma, near the old mission settlement.
Resourceful and resilient, the family adapted to the shifting tides of American life — weathering Prohibition and the Great Depression by tending the land behind their farmhouse. Much of the acreage served as cattle pasture, while their entrepreneurial spirit led them to build a roadside stand selling fuel, food, and refreshments to travelers heading into town.
Through it all, Catherine Bonneau held fast to a wistful dream: to return to her French roots and grow grapes once more.
That dream lived on in her daughter Yvonne, who became one of the pioneering growers in the Los Carneros region. In the 1970s — when many doubted the area's potential for Chardonnay — Yvonne boldly planted 30 acres of the family property with the varietal. Her vision paid off. The vineyard thrived, and its fruit quickly gained recognition, attracting the interest of renowned sparkling wine producers like Chandon, Artesa, and Gloria Ferrer.
Today, that legacy continues through John Bambury, Catherine’s grandson and the current steward of the land. With deep business expertise and an unwavering focus on quality, John carries the torch as both head winemaker and grower, blending old-world traditions with a modern approach to viticulture.
And now, the next generation has stepped in — eager, passionate, and hands-on — ensuring that the family dream continues to grow for years to come.
